The First Sunday Night...

I kind of don't know what to think, its Sunday night and I don't go to work in the morning... :-O    I do know I don't feel that depressing , soul wrenching feeling that normal comes with Sundays :)

Now on to the regularly scheduled programming, plus a new section I am calling "Life" (because it just keeps happening)

School
Not a lot here,
 - Admission Application still in process
 - 2013 -2014 FAFSA Started

Work

Had my last day at work at my old Job on Friday... not really sure what feelings I have here, probably should have posted a note on Friday, after this weekend, I cant really access any of those feelings I think I had on Friday to even say what they were... LOL

Also got my training material for the new job that was pretty exciting!  I have been using Quizlet.com to create flash cards and study on my phone using the app..

This is a really cool tool.  Its also Free (up to 8 classes)  or 15$ a year for unlimited cards.  I feel like the 15$ is totally well worth it., especially when my classes start up.

And last but certainly not least I got the shift schedule for February. As long as I pass my training next weekend, I will start my trainee shifts February 18th.

I was a bit surprised I would have about 2 weeks of no work, (no new income)  I am going to try and make the most of it and get everything in order before I get busy :)

"The Plan"

so far on track :)
still need to find a good place to volunteer, good task to complete during my break

My Rug rat

Dance Convention/Competition went GREAT this weekend.
(minus pre-teen attitude issues)

Their group got:
  • 1 Platinum
  • 4 High Golds
  • 1st Overall in Intermediate
  • Special Recognition Award for their Younger Production number
  • She also made it to scholarship finals and won a scholarship to Nationals.

she was very excited and I was super proud of her.

This is my absolute favorite shot of the night

Life
So when I thought about adding this section there were a lot of things I wanted to say here, but now a few days later @ almost 12 am I can hardly remember what they were.

In addition to getting ready for school, I want to improve other aspects of myself,
  • I have signed up for a 5K,  (Zombie run which seams pretty fun)
  • maybe make up a menu and cut some coupons to start saving more money
  • check out more opportunities to volunteer @ Jordyns school.

Ok, so even though I don't go to work in the morning I better go to bed, I still have a full day.
  • Get J up and ready and to school
  • Restart my "Couch to 5K" app for the 3rd time
  • Study Study Study
  • and dust :)
  • unpack from this weekend...
Dang, there goes my day ... :-P

Crickets...

I really want to make myself write on a semi-regular basis before I get crazy busy, so I can stay in the habit of jotting things down and having something to come back and look at as time passes...

so lets see what I can say today...

School

nothing new really, just updated FAFSA to get my local university on the distro list.

Work

2 more days and I will be handing in the badge

9 years 6 months...  learned some things, met some great people, and had the opportunity to see some really awesome technology.  I don't regret a minute of it.

I finally made my public announcement today.  I wasn't really sure if I should send something out or not. I mean.. I know some folks would like to know, but then I think others would be like...  " you are telling me this because ???"  LOL...

I also shared the link to my blog ( I feel so lame saying that for some reason...)

if anyone of you guys are checking it out... Its been great working with you and I hope we can cross paths again :)

Also... I have been super busy, I was hoping I might coast my last couple of days, but that doesn't seem to be the case.. lol

The Plan

Still on track :)

My Rug Rat

OMG.... this child is driving me crazy.  I LOVE her to death but my goodness...

Everything seems like its harder than it has to be... she is upset with me because she has  Physics test tomorrow, and while going over questions with her, she doesn't know 30% of the answers so I make her go to her room and write down the whole worksheet...

you would think she would have learned by now, I don't play with the grades and have no problem confiscating electronics...

On the brighter side,  she has her first Dance Competition of the Season this weekend... First one with new studio.
Costumes are slowly trickling in 3 of 6
(also driving me crazy, because I hate doing things at the last minute during the week)

I am excited, I think she will do well. :)  This is also something I need to enjoy now, I know when things start picking up, it will be harder to be as involved as I would like to be.

well... I think this is a pretty good entry... Back to Homework...
I really need to think of something catchy to close out my entries with...  Like Doogie Howser did... what was that he said... ( Must GOOGLE it)

ok... so Goggled it, and it appears he didn't have a closer...  hmm.. guess I have to keep looking...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1WnfMFUqWQ

also... My lil one got all the questions right on the second try...  See... I knew she could do it.. :)

Peace Love & Soul....   ( uhhh.... not so much going to keep trying till something sticks)

The Plan ( kind of long)

This is my first official post using my format.

 School

Not a lot going on here since I won't be able to start until summer, but I did submit my "Re-admit" application since I have been inactive since 2008.

I also turned in my petition for the "acceptable academic progress" to be eligible for financial aide.    I had to do this, since I was going for a second bachelors and had so many hours.

Overall, I only have 31 ( science hours) to finish my BS in Biology, and I have to take Calculus and Pre-Cal also.  I am going to do the Pre-Cal and Cal at TCC

Work

old job- Monday starts my last week at old job, they are planning on keeping me busy apparently until my last day there.  I had to work on my off day, and probably some more today to get these last models updated.   :(   I also have a half day meeting on Monday that is sure to DRIVE ME CRAZY!!!!

new job - I had a couple of pre-employment things I to finish, and should be receiving some pre-work for training soon.  I will have to keep my eye out, because we are tested on it the second day of class.

The Plan

My ultimate plan is to re-apply to medical school in May 2014 (16 months).
Before I can re-apply I need to strengthen my application from when I applied 2008. I will also extend the number of schools I apply to.  I may considering applying to the Early Decision Program** at my local medical school.  I may try and get an appointment with someone in admissions to see what I could do to possible be a good candidate for that option.

Steps to improve my application:

Improve GPA
  - this is a VERY VERY VERY VERY hard thing to do, when I took my pre-requisite courses ( BIO I/II, CHEM I/II, O-Chem I/II, Phys I/II) part time in 2005 - 2007 while working at my "old job" I made B's and A's mostly B's.  These are all well and good, but I had a less than stellar 1st and 2nd year in college that were very hard to over come, so the B's did not do a lot to lift my GPA up.
- so in this situation, your options are to take undergraduate courses, or graduate courses in an informal or formal program.   I am going with an informal "do it yourself" where I complete my BS in Bio and push to make As in all my classes.

The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)
This is also another BIGGIE in the app.   My first attempt at this was very lack luster.  I felt very comfortable with the material, but was not up on the "test taking strategy" it was also one of the first years of Computer Based Test (CBT) MCAT.  I did all my practice exams on the paper test, which was a bit different than taking it all on the PC.

I have to really improve my whole approach for my second attempt.  I am considering a Prep class, but those things average about 2,000 bucks.  But considering this is the ALL OR NOTHING chance, I may go ahead and invest in one of those.  I am shooting for a 35+  and considering my core classes will be 5+ years old I will need a refresh.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)
LORs are another big thing to have in your application.
Some DO (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine) medical schools require a DO LOR
- With my first application I only had 2 LORs
    - 1 from my very nice chemistry professor
    - 1 from my Director at the time ( she is awesome by the way best Manager I ever worked for :) )

I don't think this was enough, and it was also the reason I did not apply to any DO schools because I did not have a DO LOR.
- also going to night classes Part time, and working full time with a toddler I didn't really find a good time to try and get more LORs from professors.  It is good to have at least 2 of these.

-- So I plan to be more engaged with my professors early on, and hopefully get on some projects or research which will hopefully lead to some good LORs

-- the school also has a Pre-Health Professional Committee so I may check that out see if I can pass there test to get a LOR from them also.

-- I will also hopefully get a chance to get to work for some pretty cool Drs in the ER that may be willing to give me LORs

Health Care Experience

I actually had a fair amount of hours volunteering in the hospital with my last application but, I don't think it put me anywhere above the rest.
with successful completion of training at my new job, and working there will be the ULTIMATE in exposure into the health care world without being a board certified health care professional.

Volunteer
I had a good amount of this activity to, with Big Brother Big Sister, and Hospital volunteering, but I will need to continue to grow in this area.  Beyond just my volunteering with Jordyns "stuff"

I was thinking a women's pregnancy center or shelter.  Since I a considering maternal fetal medicine this may fit right in, and since I will be going at this full time I will have more flexibility in my options of where to volunteer

My Rug rat

So my daughter is currently 10 and will be turning 11 in April.   She has been very supportive of my goals for a while, but I am not sure she totally understand what that means yet.

Up until now I had always maintained my employment so we were able to afford the "extra" things on top of what we needed to survive.

My goal is to impact her "stuff" as little as possible.  She currently goes to a private school and dances in Junior company at a local dance studio.  Those are both significant expenses.  I want to make sure she maintains her dance work, and she will be auditioning for a local Performing Arts school in February which is less expensive than her current school.

I think the biggest impact to her will be my schedule, and the "extra" things she is used to.

But we will work it out :)

Ok, so I guess I have said enough for today, and plus its time to get my lil one to practice. We have our first competition this weekend... :)

                                   ----------------------------------------------------------

 ** Early Decision Program Explanation
the Early Decision Program (EDP) allows applicants to secure an acceptance from one EDP-participating medical school by October 1 while allowing sufficient time to apply to other schools if not accepted.
Sounds great, right? It can be if you get in, but to apply early decision applicants must agree to the following:
1. They will apply to only one medical school (AMCAS or non-AMCAS) through the Early Decision Program.
2. They will not apply through the EDP if an initial or secondary application has been submitted to a U.S. allopathic (M.D. degree-granting) medical school for the current entering class.
3. They will not submit additional applications until:
    a) receipt of an EDP rejection; or
    b) receipt of a formal release from the EDP commitment; or
    c) the October 1 notification deadline passes.
4. They agree to attend the school if offered an EDP acceptance.

What's up with this Blog???

So....

I am thinking what I am going to do with this.   I think I started this blog to kind of help me progress and move through this new journey to feel like I have someone to talk to, without having to burden my friends and family with my Cray Cray.

But I want to keep it organized.  I don't really see this having many (if any) followers or views, but I want to be able to look back at it over time, and understand what the heck I was saying and thinking.

I think I am going to go with the below categories for most post and talk about how each one is going

School - challenges, accomplishments, rants
Work - thoughts, fears, progress
"The Plan" - the layout of what I want to do to achieve my goal and how I am staying on track
My Rug rat - what my little one is up to and how she is coping with the journey

I am sure as time progresses  I will have some interesting things to talk about.

Last Week of Work

So January 25th will be my last day of work... ( at my former career)

And January 30th will be my first day of training at my new job ( on my way to new career)

I have varying feelings about both. How about I try to express those, I guess its the reason for this blog anyway.

Leaving my first job
- Excited to see what the future holds
- Glad I finally had the courage to leave
- Going to miss the paycheck

Starting New Job
- Super pumped about the opportunity to work this job
- Scared the training will be hard
- Scared about the scheduling and how I will make "Jordyn" arrangements
- EXCITED to be in the hospital

I have put in my notice now what?!?!?

On January 1st. 2013 I submitted my resignation after almost 10 years of employment as a Systems Engineer for a major defense contractor.  It was one of the most scariest, exciting, and freeing times in my life.   I took a major step in a journey I have been wanting to travel for a very long time.  I will be starting the month of February with little to no savings, single, a 10 year old daughter in Private School and on a competitive dance team, and a new job that pay 23% of my former salary.  I am without a doubt the happiest I have ever been about the future ahead of me in a long time , so I have decided to write about it.

And so it begins...
